In 1918 Schoenberg founded the Society for Private Musical Performances in Vienna, for which he prepared and commissioned transcriptions for chamber forces of orchestral works. Tonight’s performance by members of the Northern Sinfonia gives a rare chance to hear two of these brilliant arrangements. Britten’s Sinfonietta Op.1 was an assured debut by the young composer, written for an examination at the Royal College of Music. Mahler’s Symphony no. 4 is famous for its beautiful last movement which sets the text of Das himmlische Leben for solo voice; this will be sung by soprano Bibi Heal, recently hailed by BBC Music Magazine as one of their ‘Rising Stars of 2007’.
