Mahler revised his works throughout his life; the grand orchestral scores for which he is best known started life at his piano, and the song cycle Das Lied von der Erde was no exception. Schoenberg later created an arrangement of the work for chamber ensemble which will be performed by sixteen musicians from Opera North, whose concerts in Ryedale have been extremely popular.

This is the third in a series of chamber performances of Mahler transcriptions at Ryedale (following Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and the Symphony no.4), enabling us to bring this wonderful music to venues that are not large enough for Mahler's huge orchestra!
