The BBC Singers is the country’s only full-time professional choir, and this 24-voice ensemble is renowned for its chameleon-like ability to perform a huge range of repertoire, from Tallis to Takemitsu.

This programme includes a poignant work by the Minster’s Master of the Music Philip Moore, a new work by Sir Richard Rodney Bennett and Frank Martin’s glorious setting of the Mass for double choir. The cellist Guy Johnston, who has become a fast-rising star since his BBC Proms debut with the Elgar concerto, will play Bach’s Suite no.3 and join the Singers for John Tavener’s haunting Svyati, in which the cello soars over the choir. Performed in the magnificent surroundings of York Minster, this concert is bound to be a highlight of the Festival.
