Gerald Finzi admired the poetry of Thomas Hardy so greatly that he composed no fewer than six song cycles to his texts.

Sir Richard Rodney Bennett’s atmospheric settings of Walter de la Mare poems and Finzi’s cycle frame a beautiful programme which includes three well-known serenades.

Matthew Sprange made his Wigmore Hall debut in 2007, and Opera magazine recently said his ‘clarity of diction would put a major name or two to shame’.
