A Ryedale Festival Opera concert performance
When Prince Nikolaus Eszterházy built Eszterháza Palace at Fertöd, Hungary (often called ‘the Hungarian Versailles’), he included an opera house and a marionette theatre. One of the works Haydn wrote for his prince was Philemon und Baucis, a setting of the mythological story of Jupiter and Mercury visiting the house of a pious old peasant couple, Philemon and Baucis. With an excellent cast of Guildhall students and classical specialists brought together specifically for this concert performance, Martin Vander Weyer will narrate the opera – a very special occasion and a rare opportunity to hear this beautiful work.
