RYEDALE FESTIVAL OPERA

Janáček – The Cunning Little Vixen

(performed in a new translation by John Warrack
and chamber orchestration by Iain Farrington)

Joe Austin (director)
Iain Farrington (conductor

A captivating opera for young and old alike, The Cunning Little Vixen brings to life the world of the forest. We meet the people who live nearby – the forester, a lovelorn schoolteacher, a tipsy priest, a poacher – as well as the creatures who live there – caterpillars, badgers, dragonflies, frogs, and of course the Vixen herself. Her escapades provide the basis of the plot but the opera is ultimately a moving reflection on the cycle of life.
